DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY, baritone

The internationally acclaimed Russian baritone DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY was born in Siberia and studied in Krasnoyarsk. His western operatic debut was at the Nice Opera in Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame, and his career rapidly expanded to regular engagements at major opera houses including: the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; the Metropolitan Opera, New York; the Paris Opera Bastille and Chatelet; the Bavarian State Opera, Munich; the Teatro alla Scala, Milan; the Vienna State Opera; and the Chicago Lyric Opera; as well as at major international festivals. Notable roles include the title roles in Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, Posa in Verdi's Don Carlo, Germont père in La Traviata, Francesco in I Masnadieri and Renato in Un ballo in maschera.

Hvorostovsky has given recitals in most major international venues including: London's Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Teatro alla Scala, Tchaikovsky Conservatoire Moscow, the Liceu Barcelona, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Vienna's Musikverein. He has performed recitals in Istanbul, Israel, Australia, South America and the Far East.

He appears regularly in concert with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and has worked with the conductors Abbado, Haitink, Maazel, Mehta and Gergiev. Giya Kancheli wrote his 2002 symphonic work "Do Not Grieve" for Dmitri Hvorostovsky and the San Francisco Symphony.

Hvorostovsky retains strong musical and personal contacts with Russia. The distinguished Russian composer Georgi Sviridov wrote a song cycle, St Petersburg, especially for him. In May 2004, he became the first Russian opera singer to give a solo concert with orchestra and chorus on Moscow's Red Square, which was attended by President Putin and televised in over 25 countries.

In 2005, Hvorostovsky gave an historic tour of Russia at the invitation of President Putin, singing to crowds of hundreds of thousands of people to commemorate the WWII soldiers. In January 2006, Dmitri Hvorostovsky toured the U.S. with the Philharmonia of Russia with performances of the "War Songs."

Hvorostovsky's recordings include recital and aria discs for Philips Classics and Delos Records, as well as complete opera performances on CD and DVD. He has also starred in the Rhombus Media film Don Giovanni Unmasked.

DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY performed at opening night of the Festival of the Arts BOCA 2007. Next year he will close the FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS BOCA 2008 with RENÉE FLEMING and the RUSSIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA.
