SIR JAMES GALWAY is widely regarded as both a supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer. Through his extensive touring, television appearances and more than 30 million albums sold, Sir James’ appeal has crossed all musical boundaries and reached millions worldwide. His continuous international presence includes performances at the White House, the Vatican, the Musikverein in Vienna, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Dublin’s National Concert Hall, the Salzburg Festival and Windsor Castle.
From Galway’s lips have come definitive treatments of masterworks by Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart. In addition to his performances of the standard classical repertoire, he features contemporary music in his programs, including new flute works commissioned by and for him. He premiered Fred Johnny Berg’s Concerto for Alto Flute and Orchestra with the National Symphony Orchestra in the Fall of 2006.
Sir James, his wife flutist LADY JEANNE GALWAY and harpist Catrin Finch transport listeners on a journey through the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on his album My Magic Flute, released by Deutsche Grammophon in September 2006. He delighted fans with the RCA Red Seal album The Essential James Galway (May 2006) featuring selections ranging from Peer Gynt and Concertino for Flute and Piano, Op. 107, to The Girl from Ipanema and Riverdance. Other recent albums include Ich war ein Berliner: James Galway and the Berlin Philharmonic and Wings of Song, as well as his performances on the soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
Sir James tours extensively in the U.S., Asia and Europe. Highlights of his 2007/2008 season include U.S. orchestral and recital tours in cities such as Los Angeles, San Antonio, Nashville, BOCA Raton and Minneapolis. This season Sir James will also perform in Osaka, Japan; Shanghai, China; London, U.K.; and Geneva, Switzerland. He will embark on a recital tour of Ireland, an orchestral tour of Switzerland with the INSO and lead Master Classes in Napa, California; BOCA Raton, Florida; London, U.K.; and Weggi, Switzerland. SIR JAMES GALWAY performed at the Festival of the Arts BOCA 2007 and will return with his wife, LADY JEANNE GALWAY, to the FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS BOCA 2008.
Sir James is a tireless humanitarian and promoter of the arts. He is a special representative for UNICEF. His website - www.thegalwaynetwork.com - is devoted to advanced students and educators. He is also a patron of the Duchess of Kent’s charity Future Talent.
He has received many honors including the Recording Academy’s “President’s Merit Award.” Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England has recognized him twice: in 1979 with an Order of the British Empire and in 2001 with a Knighthood for services to music.
